What are Dental Bridges?

A dental bridge is a fixed prosthetic restoration (i.e., it remains only in the oral cavity) which replaces one or more teeth that are missing from the patient’s normal dentition. The main feature of a bridge is that it rests on at least two adjacent natural teeth (braces), which must first be grinded. The dental bridge rests on some existing teeth that they use as stumps (braces) in order to glue on them the artificial teeth that replace the natural ones which have been lost.

An implant dental bridge can also be supported on implants, in case the patient has an extended number of teeth. It can also be supported on a natural tooth and an implant. This is called mixed support.

Who is in Need of Dental Bridges?

The Dentist deems it necessary to install a bridge for the following reasons:

  • To improve the patient’s aesthetic appearance and speech when one or more teeth are absent in the anterior region of the mouth.
  • To improve chewing, which is negatively affected when teeth are missing.
  • To protect adjacent teeth and competitors of the missing tooth. When a tooth is lost it is possible for the neighboring teeth to turn or slip towards the gap that has been created. Respectively the competing teeth (i.e., the opposite teeth of the upper or lower jaw) may slide down or rise upwards. All this can be avoided by installing a bridge.
  • To restore the uniform distribution of forces exerted on the patient’s mouth during chewing. In a complete dental block during chewing, vertical and horizontal forces are exerted on the teeth, which are evenly distributed throughout the teeth. In the absence of one or more teeth, then this balance is disturbed, resulting in the load on the remaining teeth with greater force. The composition of a dental bridge can restore to normal levels the balance of forces that burden the teeth during chewing.

What are the Benefits of Dental Bridges?

Bridges have many advantages over removable dentures. Below, you will find some of the benefits that dental bridges have:

  • Chewing, speech and facial aesthetics improvement
  • Stability
  • Patients accept them very easily, without feeling that they have a foreign body in their mouth
  • They have a very good aesthetics as in most cases they are not distinguished at all from the natural teeth
  • If the color of the rest of our natural teeth does not satisfy us, we can change it by applying whitening
  • They can be maintained for 10 to 15 years, if followed by a balanced diet and good oral hygiene.
  • It is completed quickly, in about 2 weeks (2-3 sessions).
  • It costs less than the implant
  • No surgery is required
  • Supports adjacent teeth and keeps them in the correct position
  • Has minimal to zero absorption of dyes
  • Prevent the remaining teeth from moving out of place

FAQs – Frequently Asked Questions

It would be good for the whitening to precede the installation of the bridge, because the whitening does not whiten the bridge, only the natural teeth.

After fitting, you will need to:

  • Avoid chewing food for the first 2 hours after placing it, for reasons of proper adhesion
  • Brush your teeth often, at least twice a day
  • Use an interdental brush
  • Use a mouthwash that does not contain chlorhexidine and ca be used in any case
  • Avoid biting your nails, chewing ice, biting a pencil or other hard object

There is the alternative of implant placement, to close the empty space, so that the adjacent teeth are not sacrificed. However, it is advisable to consult your dentist.

Depending on the material from which the bridges are made they are classified into

  • Metal-ceramic
  • all-ceramic
